Mamarisa’s Product Recommendations for new moms

1) A good nursing dress

2) A GREAT elegant nursing dress, if you are nursing in warm weather.

3) A good nursing sleep bra that is super comfy is the Lamaze brand, gray color. The black color seems to be different fabric. A regular clip-down nursing bra during the night can be annoying, so I’d recommend a sleep bra. Note that they run small.

4) Fantastic book no breast-feeding: The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding

5) A must-have item is a hands-free pumping bra. I’ve tried two brands. This one is adjustable. At first I didn’t like it very much, but once my other one stretched out too much, I found value in this one and strongly prefer it now. It’s got a strong hold and is a little thicker than I would like, but overall it’s very good.

6) A “Moses Basket” is great since the newborn is so tiny, he or she will not sleep well in a giant crib. I used this type of bed for our newborn for several months and put it in the crib. It was also an easy bed to take with us if we took an overnight trip to a family’s house.

7) A sleepsack swaddle blanket like this is great if your little one is wiggly and you aren’t an expert at swaddling. I really liked this one, the Halo Sleep Sack a lot.

8) For nursing new moms, you MUST stay hydrated. I have a lot of water bottles, but this one is my favorite by far. Why? Because I can reach for it when I’m half asleep nursing in bed and if I knock it over, it doesn’t spill and it’s easy to drink from. It's the Camelback brand.

9) Having a nice clip-down tank-top when you are nursing helps you be more discreet while nursing either around the house or in public, even if you are using a nursing cover-up. It keeps your belly covered and can look really nice under layers too. I bought two of these I liked them so much. They are the Motherhood Maternity Clip-down nursing tank tops.

10) It’s important to find the most comfortable underwear that you can when you are pregnant and also post-partum. I tried a whole bunch of brands and this by far was the winner. It is seamless, stretchy, soft and I wore them pre, during and post-partum. B.tempt’d by Wachoal.

11) For the hospital, you really want to pack non-slip socks and ones that aren’t too expensive so that you can feel okay about throwing them out after your stay at the hospital. I’m not a germ-o-phob, but I think it’s safer to trash them. That said, I used a pair like these socks at the hospital and they were great.

12) For breast-feeding new moms, you want to get some kind of gel pads to help with sore nipples. Don’t worry, it does get easier as you get used to breast-feeding and so does your baby. The brand I really liked was the Lansinoh. The ones from Dr Brown were good too.

13) For new moms who are breast-feeding and need a break, I recommend using the Dr Brown bottles so that your partner can bottle feed occasionally. Or if you need to supplement with formula, these are great bottles. Be sure to get the low flow nipples for a newborn.

14) If you plan to have the baby sleep in the same room, it’s good to get a good white noise machine. The baby will like it too and both of you will sleep better.

15) To help YOU sleep better, I’d strongly suggest wearing an eye-mask and ear-plugs. Why? Because you will want to keep some light on in the baby’s room for the overnight nursings/feedings so you don’t trip and fall when you are walking around like a zombie at 2am. Also, newborns make all sorts of strange little noises that don’t mean anything, but are just noisy and hard to sleep through. It’s not popular to say this, but you do want earplugs. You will still hear the baby when he needs you, trust me on this.
